OCAA WEEKLY AWARDS have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Sept. 9. Josh Gross, Conestoga, Men’s Soccer
First-year forward Josh Gross (Waterloo) scored a pair of goals, his first two in the OCAA, in Conestoga’s 5-2 victory over St. Clair, a rematch of the 2011 OCAA bronze medal match. The Condors have now won five straight regular season matches dating back to last season.
Victoria Smith, La Cité, Women’s Soccer
Fourth-year player Victoria Smith (Ottawa) scored the game-winning goal in La Cité’s 2-1 road win at Cambrian. With the game knotted at 1-1, Smith broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, ultimately giving the Coyotes the victory. La Cité had just one road victory in 2011 at it looks to improve on last season’s 2-2-3 record.
Cambrian, Men’s Soccer
Following a one-year absence from the OCAA, the Cambrian Golden Shield returned to the pitch and earned two points against last season’s top two teams in the East region, tying Algonquin and La Cite at home 1-1. Nathan Briglio (Sault Ste. Marie) and Marco Armiento (Sudbury) scored their first career OCAA goals for Cambrian.
St. Lawrence (Kingston), Women’s Soccer
After going 2-4-1 in 2011, the St. Lawrence Vikings began the new OCAA season on a winning note, defeating Centennial on the road 2-1. Vanessa Hutchinson (Kingston) and Sydney Midwood (Sydenham) both scored for the Vikings, with Hutchinson’s game-winner breaking a 1-1 tie in the 50th minute of the match.
