VAUGHAN, ON – In the last match of the 2011 Ontario Cup Finals played under the lights of the Ontario Soccer Centre’s Turf Field on a cool September evening, Scarborough GS United met Toronto Celtic to decide the Senior Men’s Provincial Champion and book their ticket to the Challenge Cup at Club Nationals to be held in Brossard, Québec from October 5-10th.
In 2010, the Senior Men’s Ontario Cup Champions were A.E.K. London and Scarborough GS United last won the title in 2005.
Toronto Celtic are not on the Ontario Cup Champions List dating back to 1901 and winning the 2011 Senior Men’s Provincial Championship was one for the history books.
A total of 53 teams started in the Senior Men’s Division back in May and 51 games were played to get down to the two finalists for the Provincial Championship.
Both teams played a very fast-paced game with high intensity. In the first half, both squads were energized and pressing for a goal, but the chances did not materialize into a goal and the scoreboard stood at 0-0 at half-time.
The second half was much the same as the first – fast-paced and energized, but the game remained deadlocked with neither side able to find the net.
After ninety minutes plus three minutes of added-time in an intense see-saw battle which saw both sides creating chances ably saved by excellent goal-keeping at both ends, a very vocal and partisan capacity-crowd saw the game sent to Kicks from the Penalty Mark.
It was GS United that gained the advantage in PKs early in the run, but Celtic tied it up with their fourth shot and It became a game of sudden-death.
In the end, it was the Celtic’s keeper who made the key second save to win the Ontario Cup and book the team’s ticket to the Challenge Cup at Club Nationals to be held in Brossard, Québec from October 5-10th.
Final Score:
Toronto Celtic (5) 0 v 0 (4) Scarborough GS United (PK)
