VAUGHAN, ON – The Under 17 Boys Tier 1 Final saw the Mississauga Dixie Lions face the Ajax Strikers 94.

Both teams met in the 2010 U16 Boys Tier 1 Ontario Cup Final with Ajax the defending Champions, so the return match promised to be a firecracker of a game with  Mississauga primed to prove their mettle.

With the Lions’ pride on the line, Dixie came out pumped and scored the first goal in the 30th minute with a smart give-and-go play resulting in a strike from outside the box by #19 Cory Carter to put Dixie on the scoreboard.

The remainder of the first half featured an exciting see-saw battle as both sides demonstrated their superb skill, fitness and athleticism as the play alternated end-to-end.

But the Lions maintained their 1-0 lead going into the half-time break.

The second half featured many exciting plays and close chances as the Strikers pressed for the equalizer and the Lions defended and countered.

In the waning minutes of the game, never-say-die Ajax accomplished the unimaginable, tying the extremely close game in the 89th minute when a scramble in front of the net gave an split-second opening to #8 Keishon Alcindor, to tie the game.

With the clock running out the 2 minutes of stoppage time, the fans on both sides resigned themselves to another Championship decided by Kick from the Penalty Mark.

But in the second shocker of the game, #16 Bruce Cullen received a pass in front of the net and scored the winning goal in the 91st minute with only seconds remaining on the referee`s clock.

Despite the Dixie Lions`valiant efforts, the Ajax Strikers managed an amazing come-back to win back-to-back Ontario Cup Championships by a score of 2-1.

As Provincial Champions, the Ajax Strikers will represent Ontario at the U18 Boys National Club Championships to be held in Fredericton, NB from October 5-11th.
