VAUGHAN, ON – Another beautiful September day set the stage for the Under 15 Girls Ontario Cup Final between the Erin Mills Eagles A and the Waterloo Phoenix.
Both teams came out in full force, looking for the coveted Ontario Cup title.
Erin Mills was first on the clock with a goal by # 99 Maila Carboni in the 26th minute. Her straight-on shot went to the bottom right side of the net, bounced off the keeper’s waiting hands and into the net.
Battling back hard for the equalizer, Waterloo were rewarded in the 42nd minute with a goal scored by #14 Adele Valeriote on a loopy ball that made a high arc over the keeper’s outstretched hands.
The second half saw both teams pushing for the go-ahead goal, creating chances but not finding the net.
Waterloo upped the pressure through the middle of the second half, but Erin Mills countered each time, moving Waterloo back into their own end.
In the 70th minute, Waterloo finally took the lead on a smart header pass in front of the net to #9 Jessica Burke.
As the clock wound down, the Fighting Eagles swooped repeatedly into the Phoenix half, but were unable to find the back of the net.
As the final whistle blew, the Waterloo Phoenix were crowned Ontario Cup Champions.
