Rexdale Reunited Elites Win Ontario Classics Championship
VAUGHAN, ON — A cool mid-September evening draped in a misty drizzle saw the Rexdale Reunited Elites and the Acton Classics meet at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan to battle for the Ontario Classics title and the opportunity to represent the province at Nationals in Victoria, BC later in October.
Both sides started strong, creating numerous opportunities, but neither team could find the back of the net.
The first half ended scoreless, and the scoreboard stayed frozen at 0-0 for a good part of the second half.
Acton pressed aggressively for advantage, coming close to scoring on a corner-kick in the 64th minute, but a huge save by Rexdale’s #1 Cheryl Curtis kept the scoreboard at zeroes.
On a counter-attack in the 84th minute, the Elites capitalized on a beautiful give-and-go play into the 18-yard box with #4 Sharon Djordjevic popping the ball over the keeper’s outstretched hands.
With time running out to equalize in the two minutes of added time, Acton continued to press forward with all players including the keeper on the attack.
Despite several potentially dangerous scrambles in front of the Elites’ net, the ball always gravitated to the feet of the defenders and was cleared out of harm’s way.
At the final whistle, the Rexdale Reunited Elites had successfully defended their 1-0 lead and were crowned Ontario Classics Champions.
