VAUGHAN, ON – The Under 13 Boys kicked of the weekend’s games at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, with what promised to be an entertaining affair between two York Region rivals.
From the opening whistle, the technical ability of both Vaughan Azzurri and the Woodbridge Strikers was on display and it was obvious why these teams were meeting in the Ontario Cup Final.
Both sides enjoyed stretches of possession, but chances were at a premium. Both teams kept their shape and were well organized defensively resulting in a 0-0 score at the half.
The defensive struggle continued in the second half, but there was no shortage of skill on display. Both teams played with full determination, knowing how important a goal would be for their cause.
Woodbridge came closest to opening the scoring about seven minutes from time, but Vaughan goalkeeper Antonio Damiani was there to make a key save when Woodbridge’s #5 Dayonn Harris broke into the penalty area and unleashed a close range shot.
By the final whistle, neither side had managed to find that opening goal, so the match went to kicks from the penalty mark to decide the Under 13 Boys Champion.
On kicks from the penalty mark, it was Vaughan’s goalkeeper Antonio Damiani that stole the show, saving three spot kicks to clinch a 3-1 shootout victory and crown the Vaughan Azzurri A Under 13 Boys Ontario Cup Champions.
