VAUGHAN, ON — Canada’s women’s U-17 team presented by BMO has gathered for its 10 day camp at the Ontario Soccer Association’s complex in Vaughan, Ontario. The 27 player camp will be Canada’s last Canadian based gathering before this September’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2010. Head Coach Bryan Rosenfeld will lead his team through several inter-squad and scrimmage matches during the camp.
“This camp comes at a vital point in our preparations heading into this fall’s World Cup,†said Rosenfeld. “We are looking forward to accomplishing a lot of work in the 10 days ahead of us. Being based in Canada allows us the opportunity to look at a couple of new players at this camp.â€
The Toronto camp will feature a series of fitness tests ahead of two-a-day practice sessions. Also included in the camp will be a visit from two BMO sponsored U-9 girls teams from the Vaughn Soccer Club on Wednesday, June 30 who will take in a training session and attend a meet and greet with the players.
Canada kicked-off its World Cup preparations in early June with a camp in Sunrise, Florida. The Florida camp was capped with an impressive 2:1 victory over Japan in an international friendly on 10 June.
Next in the team’s preparations for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2010 will be a camp in early August. Canada will then travel to Florida in late August for its final preparatory camp before making the short journey south to Trinidad and Tobago.
Canada has been drawn into Group A at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2010 with Ghana, Brazil, and recently qualified Ireland. The young canucks will open the tournament against Ghana on 6 September, before facing Ireland on 9 September, and will complete group play on 13 September against Brazil.
Should Canada advance, the quarter-final round will take place on 16 and 17 September, the semi-finals will be played on 21 September, and a tournament final will be crowned on 25 September.
Canada, whose presenting sponsor is BMO Financial Group, has now qualified for the first two FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cups. Two years ago at New Zealand 2008, Canada reached the quarter-final stage.
