Waterloo Hawks Unseat Richmond Hill Raiders
VAUGHAN, ON — The Waterloo Hawks U21 Women unseated last year’s Champion Richmond Hill Raiders by a score of 3-0 to win the 2009 Ontario Cup at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.
The wind picked up and the clouds rolled in as the Under 21 Women kicked off on a rainy pitch, both teams needing a fair bit of heart to get through this rain-filled Final.
The first half started with neither team dominating, but after a hand-ball in the17th minute, Waterloo was awarded a penalty kick taken by Alyssa Lagonia.
The shot went low and to the right side as the Richmond Hill keeper dove in the opposite direction, putting the Hawks up 1-0 on the scoreboard.
In the 42nd minute, Kelly-Lynn Spettigue served Sarah Houghton into space, and Houghton followed through on a straight pass to up the score 2-0 going into the half-time break.
The second half started with both teams hungry and pressing for a goal.
Even a two goal cushion did not diminish the Hawks offensive fervor, and Richmond Hill’s drive to get on the board intensified as the clock wound down.
Both teams pushed hard for a goal, but most of the play was back-and-forth with much of the play taking place in the midfield.
In the 85th minute, Kaylen Shimoda broke the stalemate with a through-goal to the left corner to definitively unseat last year’s winners and crown the Waterloo Hawks 2009 Ontario Cup Champions.
