Ronald De Boer answers questions on Coach and Player Development

VAUGHAN, ON — The Ontario Soccer Association’s annual International Coaching Conference was held on Saturday and Sunday at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.

In keeping with the growing prestige of the Conference, the OSA invited four internationally renowned and highly respected coaches who presented practical demonstrations at this year’s event: Tosh Farrell (Everton FC, UK), Daniele Corazza (Bologna FC, Italy) Jose Sulantay (U20 National Team, Chile) and Ronald De Boer (Holland National Team).

These coaches shared a wealth of practical experience and technical knowledge with some 700 Ontario coaches who came to see these professionals in action and to learn more about the art and science of coaching.

The day began with the presentation of the annual Investor’s Group Award. Shirley Mac presented on behalf of the Investor’s Group to David Crabb of Kingston United SC. Jen Garafalo from Kingston United accepted the award on David’s behalf.

Attendees were treated once again to a unique, entertaining and thought-provoking session on developing ‘striking at goal with composure’ by Tony “Tosh” Farrell, former 6-12 Co-ordinator for Everton FC’s Academy and currently Head of International Football Development.

2009.11.07 Coaching Conference (65)_1 Daniele Corazza (Italy)

Daniele Corazza from Italy demonstrated what he calls the “Mundialito method” which he is pioneering in regard to youth development in the Bologna FC Soccer School. Corazza has been responsible for the Bologna Youth Program since 2004-2005 and in 2005 he also became responsible for the Campus Bologna. Prior to joining Bologna FC in 2004, he had worked in the Juventus Soccer School and spent over 10 years working in the Juventus Summer Camps.

2009.11.07 Coaching Conference (92)_1 Jose Sulantay (Chile)

Jose Sulantay shared some of his insights and experience in developing the defensive strategies used by Chile’s U-20 Men’s National Team and which were recently adopted by Chile’s National Team. Under his guidance, the Chileans qualified for U-20 World Cups in 2005 (Holland) and 2007 (Canada). Sulantay’s side marched into the Quarterfinals with a 4-0 win in extra time over Nigeria and finished the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada with the bronze medal.

Ronald De Boer and TFC Academy players demonstrated a number of warm-up and passing drills which can be used by players at all levels to improve ball control and become “the boss of the ball”. De Boer won 67 caps and scored 13 goals for the Dutch national team. He played for the Netherlands in the 1994 and the 1998 World Cup, where he played in six matches and scored two goals. De Boer also played in Euro 96, and Euro 2000.
