London Galaxy Crowned 2009 Women’s Division Champions
VAUGHAN, ON – The last match of the day kicked off at 8:00 pm under the floodlights at the Ontario Soccer Centre and saw the North London Galaxy meet the St. Catharines Jets in the Ontario Cup Women’s Final.
These teams met in September 2008 on this field fighting for the very same title and, from the starting whistle, the 2009 rematch had a distinct aura of déjà vu.
The first strike of the game came in the 36th minute when the Galaxy’s #19 Emily Costello took a long ball from the left side and shot it over the Jets’ keeper.
London increased their lead in the 44th minute when #77 Alexandra Charlebois found the back of an unattended net.
The second half saw a third unanswered goal for the London side as #7 Kate Bazos headed a corner into the net in the 49th minute.
St. Catharines finally cracked the scoreboard when #18 Kristin MacDonald headed the ball off a corner, exactly mirroring London’s previous goal.
Despite their best efforts, the Jets were unable to recover altitude as the half progressed and London’s #33 Shelina Zadorsky put the game out of reach when she won her own rebound, fought through the St. Catharines defense, persisted in eluding the keeper and found the bottom right corner of the net.
For the North London Galaxy, the 2009 Ontario Cup crown was its third consecutive victory, which means another trip to the National Club Championships.
