Ontario U14 Boys 2 v 5 Tigres do Brasil

XEREM, Brazil – The Ontario U14 Boys Team played the second match of their March Break Tour on Tuesday morning against Tigres do Brasil at Los Larios Stadium. For pre-tour comments, see Friday’s OSATv TouchLine interviews with Ruben Flores, Daniel Milton, Javon Brown and Ejiroghene Mrabure.

1st Half
As in the previous game Ontario’s plan was to come out and pressure the Brazilian players. This Brazilian team is highly ranked in their state and was bigger in size then Team Ontario. This did not intimidate the boys at all. We took the game to Brazil and we were rewarded with three good chances within the 18-yard box. This game plan was discussed at length at the Team Ontario pre-game meeting. The Boys maintained pressure and had good build-up in the first 20 minutes.

In the 21st minute, the Tigres pressed and scored a goal which was 4 yards off-side. The Ontario Boys responded by continuing to pressed hard. A defensive miscue at the 25-minute mark saw an Ontario defender head the ball back to the keeper for a clearing opportunity. The ball was off-line a bit and Peter Bonnano could not keep the ball from crossing the goal line, thereby putting the Tigres up 2-0.

Team Ontario kept pressuring and at the 27-minute mark, Jevon Brown # 14 had an excellent strike low to the left side of the net and the Tigres keeper made a sprawling save. At the 35-minute mark the Tigres player on the flank demonstrated his technical ability with a beautiful cross from the left side which the Tigres striker finished low to the right corner of the net to increase the Tigres lead 3-0.

The Ontario Boys played with toughness and grit in the first half and keeper Peter Bonnano made 4 exceptional saves.

2nd Half
In the second half, Team Ontario struck quickly in the first minute when Jevon Brown # 14 pressured the Brazilian player, stole the ball and drove it deep into the Brazilian net to put Ontario on the scoreboard.

Ontario kept pressure on the Brazilian players throughout the half, at one point controlling the play in the Brazilian defending zone for more than 15 minutes. Coach Ruben Flores constantly repeated the mantra: “Maintain pressure – the Brazilian players do not like it”.

At the 12-minute mark, the Tigres were rewarded with a penalty-kick after a tough tackle in the box. The Tigres player smoked the ball into the left corner of the net to increase their lead 4-1.

Team Ontario substituted Peter Bonnano with Daniel Merkel between the uprights and kept up the pressure. Ejiroghene Mrabure # 11 hit the cross bar at the 26-minute mark with a blistering shot from the right side. At the 28-minute mark, Team Ontario was awarded a penalty-kick when a Brazilian player handled the ball inside the 18-yard box.

Derick Sequeira # 17 took the penalty-kick, but the very agile Brazilian keeper made the save. However, Jordan Haynes # 24 was right there to finish the play as Team notched its second goal.

At the 31-minute mark, the Tigres striker demonstrated exceptional skill with a little flick that eluded Daniel Merkel and increased the Tigres lead to 3 again with a score of 5-2.

At the 33-minute mark Team Ontario was awarded a penalty-kick but was unable to capitalize when the Brazilian keeper made an exceptional save on Jordan Haynes # 24.

Final Score: Team Tigres 5 v 2 Team Ontario

Corners:

  • Team Ontario 6 Team Tigres 1 (1st)
  • Team Ontario 8 Team Tigres 2 (2nd)

Team Ontario finished strong and were congratulated by the coaching staff for an excellent effort. This was a very physical game against a Brazilian side with players who were on average taller and heavier and who demonstrated the technical wizardry for which Brazilian soccer is renowned.
